GE Vernova Orders Surge 96% to $29 Billion — and a $9 Billion Grid Deal Follows

2026-10-28

GE Vernova orders surged 96% organically to $29.3 billion in the third quarter of 2026, the energy company reported on Wednesday, October 28, as earnings of $4.81 a share on revenue of $12.64 billion beat Wall Street forecasts and management raised full-year guidance. GE Vernova also announced a $9 billion deal to buy high-voltage grid equipment maker Trench Group, and its shares rose in premarket trading as investors got one of the clearest reads yet on how hard the AI data-center buildout is pulling demand for power equipment.

What happened?

GE Vernova, the energy business spun out of General Electric, reported third-quarter revenue of $12.64 billion, up 27% from a year earlier and ahead of the roughly $12 billion analysts expected. Diluted earnings were $4.81 a share, compared with a consensus forecast of about $4.01 a share and $1.64 a share a year earlier. Net income rose to $1.29 billion, from $453 million in the same quarter last year.

The number that grabbed the market, though, was orders. New orders reached $29.3 billion, up 96% organically, led by equipment in the Power unit and continued strength in services. That was far above the $21 billion one Bank of America analyst had pencilled in, according to Barron's. Total backlog grew $20 billion in just one quarter, to $197 billion.

Key facts

  • Earnings: $4.81 a share, versus about $4.01 expected and $1.64 a year ago.
  • Revenue: $12.64 billion, up 27% year over year, versus about $12 billion expected.
  • Orders: $29.3 billion, up 96% organically, led by Power equipment and services.
  • Backlog: $197 billion, up $20 billion sequentially; management expects it to exceed $200 billion in the fourth quarter.
  • Profitability and cash: Adjusted EBITDA was $1.9 billion at a 15.4% margin, and free cash flow was $5.4 billion in the quarter.
  • Guidance raised: Full-year 2026 revenue is now expected at $46.5 billion to $47.5 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 13.5% to 14.5% and free cash flow of $16 billion to $17 billion.
  • Deal: A $9 billion agreement to buy Trench Group, a maker of high-voltage grid equipment, from Triton Partners.

Why is it blowing up?

This is, at its core, an AI power story. Utilities and data-center developers need far more electricity, far faster, than grids were built to deliver, and GE Vernova sells much of the equipment that generates and moves that power. In the Power unit, it signed contracts for 11 gigawatts of new gas equipment, converted another 13 gigawatts of slot reservations into firm orders and shipped 5 gigawatts. Gas equipment backlog plus slot reservations rose from 116 gigawatts to 122 gigawatts, and one summary of the quarterly filing put gas turbine orders at 112 units, up from 29 a year earlier.

Electrification told a similar story: segment revenue rose 51%, including Prolec GE, with organic growth of 16%, a book-to-bill ratio of about 1.4 and an equipment backlog of $42.2 billion. Wind orders were also higher, helped by North American repowering.

Chief Executive Scott Strazik said demand for electricity infrastructure is increasing around the world. The board had already doubled the share repurchase authorisation in October, to $20 billion from $10 billion.

The $9 billion Trench deal

Alongside the results, GE Vernova said it would buy Trench Group for $9 billion in cash and debt. Trench makes high-voltage equipment for power transmission, squarely inside the grid-modernisation demand GE Vernova is already riding. MarketWatch reported Trench is expected to generate about $1.9 billion in revenue in 2028 at an adjusted EBITDA margin of roughly 36%.

The share reaction was not a straight line. Barron's noted the stock initially slipped about 2% before recovering to around $917, up about 2.5%, while Morningstar reported shares up 2.7% to $919 in premarket trading and Seeking Alpha reported a 4.4% premarket jump after the deal was announced.

What's next?

The immediate test is execution: converting a $197 billion backlog into shipped equipment and services revenue without margin slippage. Investors will also watch the Trench closing timetable, the path to at least 130 gigawatts of gas equipment under contract by year-end, and whether fourth-quarter backlog clears $200 billion as management expects. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security.
