iPhone Duo: Apple's $1,999 Foldable Is Almost Here — Everything You Need to Know
2026-10-03
After nearly a decade of rumors, Apple has finally done it. The iPhone Duo — Apple's first foldable iPhone — was unveiled on September 9 at the "Surprise and Shine" event, and it hits shelves on October 23. Here's every confirmed detail.
What is the iPhone Duo?
It's a book-style foldable. Folded shut, it's a regular 5.4-inch iPhone. Open it up and it unfolds to a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display — the largest screen ever on an iPhone, roughly 80% bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro's display. Apple calls its passport-like hinge a breakthrough: CEO John Ternus said most foldables feel like "two phones awkwardly stuck together," while the Duo's crease is effectively invisible to the naked eye.

Price and release date
The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB — the most expensive iPhone ever — climbing to $3,199 for the 2TB model. Pre-orders open October 16, with full availability October 23 in the US and more than 70 countries.
The Samsung feud
Samsung couldn't resist. During Apple's event, Samsung Mobile posted "Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers," mocking the Duo's similarity to its Galaxy Z Fold line — and even Duolingo jumped into the banter. The roast battle went viral on its own: free marketing for both sides.
The catch: supply could be tight
A supply-chain source told Chinese outlet Jiemian News that Foxconn's final assembly yields for the Duo were only slightly above 60% in mid-September, and it could take six months to a year to reach mature yields. Translation: early units may be genuinely hard to get.
Bigger picture: a new Apple
The event was also John Ternus's first keynote since replacing Tim Cook as CEO on September 1. One month in, Ternus is reportedly pushing Apple to launch products faster and get "more experimental" for the AI era. Next up: an October 13 smart home launch with a new home hub (rumored iMac G4-style design), HomePod mini, and Apple TV.
Should you buy it?
If you want the biggest iPhone screen ever and don't mind the $2,000 entry fee — and can actually find one in stock — the Duo is Apple's most dramatic redesign since the Vision Pro. Everyone else: the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 is the sane pick.
