South Korea Beats Every Forecast: GDP Grows 1% as KOSPI Surges 4%

2026-10-27

South Korea's economy grew 1.0% in the third quarter of 2026, beating both the 0.7% median forecast in a Reuters poll and the Bank of Korea's own 0.3% August forecast — and Seoul stocks celebrated, with the KOSPI surging more than 4% on Tuesday and triggering a buy-side sidecar. The double beat, driven by the global AI semiconductor boom, made South Korea the standout market in Asia on October 27.

What happened

Advance estimates from the Bank of Korea, released Tuesday, showed gross domestic product expanding 1.0% in July-September from the previous quarter, accelerating from 0.6% growth in April-June. On a year-on-year basis the economy expanded 3.4%. The result was far stronger than the central bank expected in August, when it forecast just 0.3% for the quarter and 3.3% growth for the full year.

The Bank of Korea was explicit about what powered the beat. Lee Dong-won, director general of the central bank's economic statistics department, told a briefing that about half of the quarter's economic growth is estimated to be driven by semiconductors. Facility investment rose 4.1% from the previous quarter, construction investment increased 0.7%, and government spending advanced 1.9%.

The numbers behind the beat

South Korea's exports topped $800 billion in the first nine months of 2026 — already above last year's full-year record — and are on track to exceed $1 trillion this year, which would make South Korea only the fourth country to reach that milestone, after the United States, China and Germany. Exports hit a record $120.9 billion in September alone, with semiconductor shipments exceeding $60 billion as global demand for AI infrastructure kept memory and logic chip orders surging.

South Korea sits in the middle of the AI supply chain, so chip exports this strong also signal that worldwide data-centre investment is still expanding.

Why the KOSPI is blowing up

The benchmark KOSPI jumped 4.1% to 5,689.23 by mid-morning and traded as high as 5,701.55, up 4.24%. At 10:13 a.m. Seoul time, KOSPI 200 futures had risen 5.05% from the previous close, triggering a buy-side sidecar — a five-minute suspension of program-trading buy orders — for the first time in four trading sessions, according to the Korea Exchange.

Chip giants led the rally. SK hynix surged about 7% to around 1,363,000 won, Samsung Electronics jumped about 5.1% to 223,750 won, SK Square gained about 11%, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics climbed about 9.7%. Foreign investors bought roughly 409 billion won of shares and institutions about 228 billion won, while retail investors sold about 659 billion won to take profits. The move also followed an overnight rebound on Wall Street, where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose about 2.8%, and renewed AI optimism after Anthropic's US IPO filing. Japan's Nikkei rose about 1.9% the same morning, and MSCI's broad Asia-Pacific index outside Japan gained 1.2%.

The weak spot in a strong quarter

The headline beat hides an uneven economy. Private consumption fell 0.2% in the third quarter — its first decline in nearly four years — weighed down by stock-market weakness during the quarter and sluggish car sales affected by strikes at major automakers. Bank of Korea officials expect consumption to recover gradually, helped by dividend payouts from chip firms to shareholders in the fourth quarter and employee bonus payments in early 2027.

Exports and investment are expected to remain robust in the fourth quarter, and officials said chip production volumes will expand further next year, though prices are expected to rise more slowly.

What's next

The Bank of Korea releases updated projections next month, and officials noted growth could reach about 3.7% this year if fourth-quarter output matches the third quarter. SK hynix also reports earnings this week. This report covers what happened and why markets reacted; it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security.

FAQ

How fast did South Korea's economy grow in Q3 2026?

GDP grew 1.0% from the previous quarter and 3.4% year on year, according to advance Bank of Korea estimates — beating a 0.7% Reuters poll forecast and the Bank of Korea's own 0.3% August forecast.

Why did the KOSPI surge more than 4%?

Investors bought semiconductor shares after the GDP beat, a roughly 2.8% overnight jump in US chip stocks and renewed AI optimism. SK hynix rose about 7% and Samsung Electronics about 5%, and KOSPI 200 futures triggered a buy-side sidecar.

What is a buy-side sidecar?

It is a Korea Exchange safeguard that suspends program-trading buy orders for five minutes when KOSPI 200 futures stay 5% or more above the previous close for a minute. Tuesday's was the first on the main board in four sessions.

What was weak in South Korea's Q3 data?

Private consumption fell 0.2%, its first decline in nearly four years. The Bank of Korea expects it to recover gradually as chip-firm dividends and employee bonuses lift household income.
