Tata Steel Profit Jumps 16% to ₹3,700 Crore as India Volumes Surge
2026-11-08
Tata Steel's consolidated net profit rose 16.2% to ₹3,699.59 crore in the September quarter, the company reported on Saturday, November 7, as stronger Indian volumes lifted revenue 11.5% to ₹65,436.24 crore and EBITDA climbed 17% to ₹10,665 crore. The results landed a day before India's special Diwali Muhurat trading session.
What happened
Tata Steel announced its second-quarter results for FY2026-27, covering the quarter ended September 30, 2026, after its board approved the numbers on November 7. The headline figures all moved in the same direction:
- Net profit: ₹3,699.59 crore, up 16.2% from ₹3,183.09 crore a year earlier
- Revenue from operations: ₹65,436.24 crore, up 11.5% from ₹58,689.29 crore
- EBITDA: ₹10,665 crore, up 17% year on year and 14% from the previous quarter, for a margin of about 16%
- Profit before tax: ₹5,455.15 crore, up 29.2%
- Basic EPS: ₹2.94, up from ₹2.49
Profit from the India business alone was ₹5,055 crore, according to reports of the company's release, underlining how much of the group's earnings now come from its home market. For the first half of FY27, consolidated revenue reached ₹1,26,231 crore and net profit ₹6,084.83 crore.
Why it is blowing up
The timing is doing a lot of the work. The results landed on a Saturday, hours before the NSE and BSE open for the one-hour Muhurat trading session on Sunday, November 8, that marks the start of Samvat 2083. Tata Steel appeared on multiple stocks-to-watch lists for that session, alongside Adani Enterprises and auto and jewellery names riding Dhanteras demand. The stock had already closed Friday at ₹186 on the BSE, up 2.20%, before the numbers were public — so the Muhurat session and Monday's regular trade will be the market's first real chance to react.
The beat has a clean story behind it: volume. India's crude steel production rose 7% from the previous quarter to 6.18 million tonnes, and deliveries jumped 16% to 5.98 million tonnes. The India segment produced ₹42,653 crore of revenue and ₹10,634 crore of EBITDA — a 25% margin — helped by automotive and special-products demand.
Europe is still the mixed part of the story
Outside India, the picture split. The Netherlands business reported revenue of €1,395 million and EBITDA of €72 million, helped by the restart of its Direct Sheet Plant in early August, with liquid steel production of 1.52 million tonnes. The UK business, by contrast, posted revenue of £411 million and an EBITDA loss of £56 million on deliveries of 0.38 million tonnes, which the company blamed on elevated imports and inventory build-up.
Two details in the fine print matter for anyone reading past the headline. First, consolidated profit includes exceptional income of ₹348.68 crore, including a fair-value gain on investments partly offset by restructuring and redundancy provisions. Second, the statutory auditors issued a qualified opinion on the standalone results, tied to uncertainty over the carrying value of the investment in Tata Steel Nederland. The company has extended its joint letter of intent on the Netherlands business until March 1, 2027, keeping that transition unresolved for now.
The balance sheet and what is next
Tata Steel spent about ₹3,280 crore on capital expenditure in the quarter, taking first-half spending to ₹6,860 crore, on projects including a 4.8 million-tonne expansion at Neelachal Ispat Nigam. Net debt stood at ₹91,423 crore, or 2.4 times EBITDA, with group liquidity of ₹40,076 crore. CFO Koushik Chatterjee said the focus stays on cost optimisation and working capital, and CEO T V Narendran pointed to progress on the company's volume and value growth agenda in India.
There is also a board change days away: Noel Naval Tata retires as a director and vice-chairman on November 11, 2026. What readers are watching next is how the stock trades through the Muhurat session and into Monday, and whether India's delivery growth holds for another quarter. This report is market news, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
